Celebrating Over 50 Years of Service

We educate our clients about the substantive issues and the procedures of divorce. We inform them of the preparation we must complete to resolve their issues through negotiation or litigation. We address alternative methods of resolving disputes, including mediation. We strive to assist our clients in achieving their realistic goals and objectives.

Custody and Parenting Time

The determination of a custody and parenting time plan (visitation) for a divorcing couple’s children can be very difficult. We assist our clients in creating plans that meet the best interests and needs of each child and that are based on the strengths of our client. We address in which parent’s residence the children will live, how the other parent will have sufficient time with the children, and who will participate in making major decisions regarding each child’s health, education, and general well being.

Child Support

Our State has Guidelines for determining child support based on each party’s income and on the parties’ custody and parenting plan. The Guidelines are in effect until a certain income level and then statutory factors are taken into consideration in determining child support, including the needs of the child, the standard of living and economic circumstances of each parent, the sources of income and assets of each parent, the earning ability of each parent, and the need and capacity of the child for education, including college education. We work with our clients to determine each parent’s responsibility to support their children, to provide or contribute to the cost of health insurance, and to pay a share of the children’s unreimbursed health care expenses, work related child care expenses, and other expenses. We assist our clients in resolving the sometimes complex issue of payment of children’s college education expenses.

Spousal Support or Alimony

Our law provides that in certain situations, the spouse who has the superior income will pay support, which is called alimony, to the other spouse to assist that spouse in meeting her or his financial needs. The support can be for an open term or for a limited term based upon the facts of the parties’ marriage, including one party’s need, the other party’s ability to pay, the length of the marriage, the age and health of each party, their earning capacities, education levels, vocational skills, absence from the job market to care for the family, and related factors.

Property Valuation and Division

Property acquired during the marriage, with a few exceptions, is subject to being fairly and equitably distributed between the parties. We work with our clients to determine the assets that are subject to equitable distribution, or that are exempt from such distribution, to value these assets, often with the help of financial experts, and to propose a plan for distribution which is used in negotiations or at trial.

Post Judgment Issues

We work with our clients to resolve issues that arise after the parties are divorced. The growth and development of the parties’ children and the increased costs to meet the children’s needs, changes in the parties’ employment situations, or other significant changes in the parties’ circumstances may result in a reconsideration and modification of previously resolved issues. We also assist clients in enforcing their rights that they received in prior court orders or settlement agreements.

Prenuptial Agreements

Prior to marriage, couples can enter into agreements, which are binding contracts, between them that set forth their agreed-upon resolution of certain financial issues, including spousal support and equitable distribution of marital assets, in the event they divorce or upon one party’s death. Some clients have children from a prior marriage and want to protect their children’s economic futures. Other clients own family property or have developed businesses and want to address how those assets will be divided in the event of a divorce, and who will receive those assets upon death.

Domestic Violence

New Jersey has strong domestic violence laws. We assist our clients who have been victims of domestic violence in seeking protection through the Court. We have experienced criminal defense attorneys who assist clients charged with domestic violence in both Superior Court and Municipal Court.

We assist our clients in adoption proceedings, including step-parent adoptions, independent adoptions, and agency adoptions.

A mediator is an impartial individual who assists two parties in considering alternatives and compromises and developing a resolution that meets each party’s needs. We assist clients by facilitating negotiations between them to reach a mutually acceptable agreement to their dispute.

I retained attorney Steve Loewenthal to handle my personal injury case. Prior to our consultation, I was nervous  and still  unsure about what to do. Steve explained  the law, my options, and addressed all my questions or concerns about going forward. He’s an extremely knowledgeable attorney  who acts in a professional, respectful, and kind demeanor. He is direct and honest, does not make any ridiculous promises, or show any sign of unethical behavior.  Before  the depositions,  he explained the process, took the time to calm my concerns/fears, but most importantly, instructed me to tell the truth. I am aware of some of the negative stereotypes assumed about personal injury attorneys; however, Steve exhibits NONE of these negative qualities.

If you are a sports fan, you will love his office! His has an amazing assistant who was also very helpful! I did not call often but when I did, she knew who I was and exchanged pleasantries. With integrity and expertise, Steve succeeded in effectively handling my case. I do not share my experiences often; but in this case, Steve Loewenthal definitely earned my trust, respect, and my recommendation!

Mr. Loewenthal represented me in a civil case. From the initial consultation to the settlement, Steve provided the most professional, knowledgeable and considerate level of service. Steve kept me informed every step of the way and took his time to explain each new development in the case.

Steve’s experience gave me confidence from the outset the case would be handled with expertise. He was able to coordinate between all parties involved and his negotiating skills resulted in a most favorable outcome. His staff was a pleasure to deal with and were very accommodating. Steve and his office went above and beyond and he comes with my highest recommendation. Thank You, Steve, for everything you did in handling my case.

You always listen and understand the issues and my questions. You explain and answer without confusion. You are a straightforward, personable lawyer and person.

Banker, Client of Sharon L. Freeman, Esq.

Mr. Loewenthal took my automobile personal injury case after 2 other law firms turned me down because of car insurance reasons that couldn’t get me a settlement. In NJ, you only have 2 years after your date of accident to pursue personal injury damage. I went to Mr. Loewenthal with my case close to 3 months before the 2 year deadline to sue. He walked me through everything that was going to happen, assured me that we have a case and worked hard on my case and met the deadline to sue. When Mr. Loewenthal called me withe settlement number, I almost fell off of my chair. He got me way more than I thought was possible, for I thought I was getting nothing because of the other lawyers turning my case down. Needless to say, Mr. Loewenthal is a “Jackpot!” lawyer and I recommend him 101% to anyone who wants a real lawyer.
