Caution around construction

Summer road construction is in full swing in Morris County. This is the peak of the season, as crews rush to get projects done before the fall.

Alcohol no longer the #1 cause of fatal DUI crashes

The problems caused on our roads by drunk drivers have been well-documented for decades. According to a 2015 report by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), someone is killed in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident on an American road or freeway every 50 minutes. Last year, 29 pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers or passengers were killed every day in a road accident caused by a drunk driver. But a new study reported by Reuters reveals that for the first time since tracking began, fatal DUI accidents are more likely to be caused by drivers who are high on prescription drugs or illegal narcotics, rather than alcohol. The study looked as far back as 2015 and determined that marijuana use was involved in more than one-third of all fatal accidents.

Are American roads unnecessarily dangerous?

The Road to Zero Coalition is a group of organizations committed to idea that car accident fatalities should be no more common or acceptable than commercial airline fatalities. If car crashes were as rare as airline crashes, tens of thousands of lives would be saved every year.

New awareness campaign tackles distracted driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is wrapping up Distracted Driving Awareness Month with a campaign designed to draw attention to the problem. Distracted driving is on the rise and is widely blamed for the increase in fatal car accidents over recent years. The NHTSA estimates that at least 3,450 car accident deaths involved distracted drivers in 2016. Smartphones are the obvious culprit, as use of the devices has gone from nonexistent to universal over the past 25 years.

Are we ready for self-driving cars?

Back in the 1980s, many people believed we would have autonomous vehicles in the near future. The time when cars pilot themselves is finally starting to become a reality, although the road to having self-driving cars has not been smooth. Some people in New Jersey and elsewhere fear that autonomous vehicle technology is still too new and not adequately tested to be safe on public roads. You may also worry that you face dangers not only from negligent drivers, but from self-driving vehicles that share the roads with you.

5 distractions that cause serious car accidents

Distractions while driving are deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 391,000 people suffered injuries in car accidents involving driver distractions. Many people multitask thinking they are not endangering themselves or others. Drivers who partake in this unsafe behavior can cause you to get into an accident and sustain serious injuries.
