Day care workers need special safety protocol

Workers who deal with children all day long have some serious risks to consider. Not only are they at risk of suffering an injury, but there is also the chance that they will become ill because of the abundance of bodily fluid contact that is common in day cares. The employers of these individuals are responsible for making sure that these risks are all minimized, and that appropriate safety protocol is in place.

Slips and trips are common when working around children. Things like spills and toys laying around are dangerous. This is one reason children should be taught to clean up their toys when they are done playing with them. Not only is this a good life skill, but it also promotes safety at the day care.

Controlling the spread of germs and biohazards is also important in day cares. These workers have to change diapers and handle tasks like wiping noses. This can transmit germs to the employees. Having clear guidelines for washing their hands and providing gloves can minimize the risk of the transmission of illnesses or infectious diseases.

Another issue is lice infestation, which can be reduced by sharing personal items like brushes, hats or towels. While skin-to-skin contact can also transmit lice, there are limited ways that you can handle this type of lice transmission, but none would really be foolproof because the chance of being fully hands off with day care children is little to none.

Day cares can also require workers to have up-to-date immunizations to help prevent the spread of preventable illnesses. Taking the specific circumstances of the day care can help to set the protocol for the center. When a worker is injured while they do their job duties, they might opt to pursue workers' compensation benefits.
