Repetitive tasks can lead to injury

Regardless of the industry, some workplace injuries are common everywhere. Some of the most typical include slips and falls, being struck by falling objects and muscle strains. However, there is one type of injury you should never ignore: repetitive strain injuries

Most people do roughly the same tasks every day at their job. This can include people working in warehouses where they constantly need to bend, lift and walk. It is also common for people who work behind a desk who spend hours typing and staring at a computer screen. From school workers to construction employees, everyone needs to be aware of the dangers to adequately circumvent any health problems down the road. 

Common types of repetitive motion injuries

One of the most common types of repetitive strain injuries is carpal tunnel. This occurs when swelling develops between the tunnel found between the ligament and bone in the wrist. Other typical injuries include:

  • Tendonitis
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
  • Ganglion cyst
  • Epicondylitis
  • Cervical radiculopathy

Symptoms of these injuries

The onset of repetitive strain may be so subtle, you do not even remember when you first began to notice it. Be aware of the signs one is forming, so you can see a doctor as soon as possible. 

  • Numbness or tingling in a limb
  • Weakness in forearms and hands
  • Constant fatigue
  • Lack of coordination
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Clumsiness

People who are most at risk

Certain actions can exacerbate issues. For example, if you sit at a desk all day with poor posture, then you will have a greater likelihood of developing these injuries over someone who sits in an ergonomic chair. Additional risk factors include:

  • Anyone who sits at a desk for at least four hours a day
  • People who do not take regular breaks
  • People who do not exercise regularly
  • Employees who work in a high-pressure environment
  • People who already have sleeping issues

Medical conditions such as diabetes and arthritis can also raise an employee's risk of developing a repetitive motion injury.
