Hidden dangers of working as a police officer

It goes without saying that there are numerous dangers associated with being a police officer. In 2015 alone, 137 officers lost their lives in the line of duty in the United States. This is a significant decrease from 2007, which had 202 deaths. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, tens of thousands of assaults occur each year where cops are the victims.

Many officers need to one day file for workers' comp. Gunshot and stab wounds are common explanations for filing, but cops can file for workers' compensation for a number of other injuries. If you are a cop and experience any of the following, then do not hesitate to file a claim:

Car accidents

Spending hours in a police cruiser puts officers at the same level of risk as anyone else on the road. In fact, cops can face an even greater likelihood of ending up in a collision because another driver may not hear the sirens and accidentally drive into the intersection at the same time as the cruiser. Following a collision, police officers should always get a thorough evaluation from a doctor. The symptoms of a traumatic brain injury may not appear until months later.

Stress can manifest in various physical symptoms, and you can file a workers' comp claim for any negative health problems related to stress. One reason why stress impacts police officers more than other workers is that cops typically maintain irregular sleeping patterns. They work odd shifts and may not be able to sleep at the same time every day.

From pursuing suspects during a foot chase to performing repetitive office tasks day-in and day-out, there are a number of standard activities that can result in a significant injury. Strains and sprains may not be incredibly severe, but they can force an officer to take a leave of absence to recover. Workers' comp can help the officer's family stay afloat until the cop can return to work.
