Nurses at risk: 3 common hospital injuries

Being a nurse is hard work. Not only is the job itself mentally and physically taxing, but it also gives you a unique risk for injuries. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, nursing and nursing assistants are one of the top occupational groups at risk of injuries. You do important work as a nurse here in New Jersey, and it is important for you to receive care if you get injured.

How are nurses getting injured? Keep reading to learn about the most common injuries and their causes.

1. Back pain

OSHA states that overexertion and bodily reaction account for 48 percent of hospital employee injuries resulting in missed work. One example of overexertion or bodily reaction is back pain. During the course of your work, you frequently bend over, lift heavy objects and stand for extended periods of time. This can put serious strain on your back.

2. Slips, trips and falls

These events account for 25 percent of injuries resulting in several days away from work. Maybe someone spilled water or another liquid on the hospital floor. When you are in a hurry taking care of a lot of patients, you might not notice this and subsequently become injured.

3. Violence

Unfortunately, violence from patients may occur. Psychiatric patients may act out and injure you. Sometimes you have to take care of violent criminals. Even family members or friends of patients can be violent. While violence only accounts for 9 percent of injuries that cause missed work, it is a serious risk that you must consider.

Experiencing any of these injuries can be devastating. You may also come into contact with harmful objects, such as a needle puncturing you or a medical instrument cutting you. If you love your job, missing even a few days of work because of an injury can be demoralizing. You may be able to file a workers' compensation claim to make up for your lost income.
