Medical malpractice possible cause of woman's death

Medical care workers in New Jersey and across the country have difficult jobs. They are often left to care for those who are no longer able to care for themselves. Those in such a position have a great deal of trust placed in them as they must often serve as an advocate for those who no longer have a voice. Unfortunately, a recently filed lawsuit seems to indicate that medical malpractice in the form of negligence may have played a role in a woman's death.

The woman reportedly died in Feb. 2016. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which is a defendant in a lawsuit stemming from the woman's death. The 76-year-old woman had several medical conditions that required specialized treatment, including paraplegia, Crohn's disease and diabetes.

Because of her medical condition, the lawsuit claims that she was especially susceptible to bed sores. However, the lawsuit, filed by her estate, alleges that the nursing home did not create an adequate care plan and further states that the facility did not provide a catheter and allowed the woman to sit in her own waste. At the time of her death, she was reportedly suffering from bed sores, sepsis, renal failure, dehydration and malnutrition. The lawsuit also accuses the facility of feeding the woman dairy even though she was lactose intolerant.

While families trust that nursing home facilities will provide the care that their loved ones require, many in New Jersey and across the country are finding that this is not always the case. Families of residents who are injured as a result of medical malpractice in the form of abuse or neglect often find themselves with few legal options. As a result, they choose to file a civil lawsuit against the parties believed responsible as the estate of this woman has done. By doing so, they can help ensure that instances of treatment such as this receive the necessary attention, potentially prompting corrective action.
