Medical malpractice: 2 nurses charged with abuse, neglect

Providing medical care for patients who are no longer able to care for themselves can be a stressful task, and may even be impossible for those without medical training. As a result, families in New Jersey often place their confidence in long-term care facilities to help ensure that their loved one's needs are met. Unfortunately, one family in another state is likely questioning the practices of the facility tasked with caring for their loved one following alleged incidents of medical malpractice that have resulted in criminal charges.

According to court papers, two nurses at the facility failed to provide the food and care that the victim required. As a result, the patient reportedly fell, resulting in a head injury. The two nurses are accused of continuing to fail to provide food, medical care and necessary medication.

Court records indicate that despite not providing the medication, the two women indicated on medical records that they had. The patient did not receive the medicine until the next administration. The nurses allegedly involved in the incident now face several criminal charges, including wanton neglect of a resident of a health care facility, dependent adult abuse and tampering with records. A representative for the facility declined to comment on the case, including failing to indicate whether the two nurses remain employed at the facility.

Often, residents in nursing home facilities have no voice of their own. They are dependent upon their caregivers to ensure that their nutritional and medical needs are met. While the nurses allegedly involved in these incidents of medical malpractice now face criminal charges, there are options for additional legal action. Often, those in New Jersey who have gone through -- or had family who experienced -- similar treatment choose to examine their options in regard to civil litigation.
