Triple amputee receives $13.75 million medical malpractice award

A medical emergency is scary and often painful. Treatment may be sought at a New Jersey emergency room, with the expectation that medical professionals will do everything in their power to ensure that the patient receives the necessary treatment. While most medical staff are experienced professionals dedicated to the care of their patients, some patients can fall through the cracks for a variety of different reasons -- sometimes with catastrophic results. A recent medical malpractice lawsuit in another state has resulted in a judgment of almost $14 million against a medical facility.

A 54-year-old woman reportedly sought treatment at a medical facility in Dec. 2012. She was suffering from sepsis when admitted. Her symptoms included low oxygen levels, an elevated heart rate and a high temperature. Despite the severity of her condition, she claims that she was not seen by a doctor until five hours after her arrival. Additionally, she asserts that nursing staff neglected to administer antibiotics until nine hours after the initial order was given.

Unfortunately, the woman went into cardiopulmonary arrest. While she was resuscitated, her limbs started showing signs of inadequate blood supply. She was ultimately transported to another facility where she underwent the amputation of her left arm below her elbow, both legs above knee and fingers on her right hand.

A jury recently awarded her both economic and non-economic damages, after determining that negligence caused the woman's injuries. The defendant, however, maintains that appropriate care was provided. In New Jersey and elsewhere, medical malpractice can have a significant impact on a person's life. While a successfully presented civil lawsuit may help with the financial consequences of such negligence, it can also prompt facilities to examine their procedures and consider whether changes are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
