Wrongful death lawsuit accuses nursing home of ignoring rape

All medical care facilities, including nursing homes, in New Jersey and across the country are tasked with meeting the needs of their patients. In addition to meeting their physical needs, such as providing proper medical care and adequate nutrition, such facilities must also protect the safety of their patients. Unfortunately, a recently filed wrongful death lawsuit accuses one facility of failing to have a plan in place to prevent the rape of one of its residents, among other accusations.

The lawsuit was recently filed against GlenShire Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre on the behalf of a deceased 63-year-old woman. Court papers indicate that the woman, who was reportedly suffering from Alzheimer's disease, only spent approximately seven weeks at the facility before she passed away. The son claims that his mother contracted a sexually transmitted disease while a patient at the facility as a result of rape. Additional details regarding the alleged crime were not included.

According to the son, his mother lost approximately 30 pounds in the time she was a patient there. An autopsy reportedly indicates that she died of natural causes, specifically sepsis that resulted from a urinary tract infection. A heart condition is also believed to have contributed to her death. The lawsuit accuses the staff at the facility of neglecting the woman and failing to implement an appropriate plan to protect residents from rape.

Unfortunately, nursing home and rehabilitation facilities in New Jersey do not always fulfill their responsibilities to their patients. In some cases, neglect and abuse can lead to the death of patients, leaving their loved ones grieving a preventable death. In cases such as this, filing a wrongful death lawsuit may be one of the few avenues to justice.
