Motor vehicle accidents: Teen to receive community service

The grief following the unexpected death of a loved one is typically overwhelming. Many in New Jersey who have lost a loved one due to motor vehicle accidents caused by another driver's negligence often receive some peace of mind from a criminal conviction. However, even if there is no satisfaction in the criminal justice system, surviving family members often seek justice in the civil court. The family of a deceased man has the option of following such a course.

The victim was a 52-year-old man who was jogging one morning on a day in April. According to reports, he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old female. The teenager was allegedly on her phone at the time of the accident and in a rush as she attempted to arrive at school in time to catch a bus for a school trip.

Unfortunately, she allegedly struck the man and his dog, then fled the scene. Reports indicate that she drove to a school where she then called her father and 911. Unfortunately, the jogger and his dog passed away as a result of injuries suffered in the accident. The teenage driver recently pleaded guilty to several charges stemming from the accident and is set to be sentenced to a license suspension and community service -- a sentence that is less harsh due to her age.

In the meantime, the deceased victim leaves behind his wife and three children. Unfortunately, the ramifications of fatal motor vehicle accidents in New Jersey extend further than overcoming grief. Many surviving family members find themselves struggling with funeral costs and lost wages. For many, pursuing claims of negligence in a civil court can result in a monetary award and  also hold all responsible parties accountable for the actions that led to a person's death.
