It can take time to determine fault in some car accidents

In the chaos that follows serious crashes, it can be difficult for New Jersey law enforcement officials to figure out which driver was at fault. Determining the factors that led to such car accidents could take some time, which could delay victims and their families from obtaining the answers that they need in order to understand why their loved one is laying in a hospital bed or is deceased. In the meantime, everyone involved is more than likely attempting to deal with the crisis as best as they can.

Route 206 here in New Jersey was shut down for several hours on a recent Monday as law enforcement officers attempted to determine what caused two vehicles to collide head-on that afternoon. Preliminary reports indicate that both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on the roadway. However, beyond that, no details were released regarding how the crash occurred.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 20-year-old man, and the driver of the southbound vehicle, a 32-year-old man, were hurt. Reports indicate that they both suffered injuries to the lower halves of their bodies and are considered to be in critical condition. One of the driver's injuries were severe enough to warrant being flown from the scene.

As both drivers recover from their injuries, they are undoubtedly incurring significant medical expenses, lost wages and other damages. Based on the outcome of the official investigation -- and possibly an independent investigation conducted by one or both parties' legal teams -- one driver could be facing a personal injury claim from the other and/or criminal charges, depending on the circumstances. As far as any civil claims go, it will ultimately be up to a New Jersey civil court to determine fault in this crash. Once liability is established, an award of damages often seen in serious car accidents could be considered. For now, it would be in the best interests of both drivers to gain an understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities.
