New Jersey sees another death in teenage car accidents

Reports confirm that another teen has died as a result of injuries suffered in a crash. She died in one of several car accidents that took place over the Memorial Day weekend. Law enforcement officials in New Jersey are not yet sure whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.

This latest death was the third passenger in a car, occupied by six people, that slammed into a bus on the afternoon of Memorial Day. The other two teens who died, a 14-year-old and an 18-year-old, did not survive the fatal injuries they suffered during the crash. Both were pronounced dead by authorities at the site of the collision.

It is still unclear what caused the 18-year-old driver to veer into oncoming traffic, where it collided with the bus. Eight passengers and the driver occupied the bus at the time of the crash. Fortunately, all of them only suffered minor injuries. Since the investigation is ongoing, it is not yet known whether any charges will be filed against the teenage driver.

While New Jersey authorities make that determination, the families of the deceased passengers are surely grieving their losses and burying teenagers who died far too soon. These families are undoubtedly feeling both an emotional and financial drain as a result. They retain the right to file wrongful death claims against the driver deemed responsible, seeking damages such as the costs of burial and other financial losses recognized by our laws. Successfully proving to the court that the driver was negligent is a prerequisite to an award of monetary damages in fatal car accidents of this nature.
