Family lost a loved one on the New Jersey Turnpike

Few things remind New Jersey residents of just how fragile life is than receiving news of a family member's sudden and tragic death. The knowledge that one minute the individual was alive and the next he or she was not may feel surreal and heartbreaking. One family that recently lost a loved one in an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike is most likely going through these emotions.

The 20-year-old college student was a passenger in a minivan. For reasons not yet known to authorities, the driver lost control of the vehicle, slammed into a guardrail and was then struck by an 18-wheeler whose driver was unable to avoid the collision. After the initial impact, a second semi-truck driver was able to avoid the now damaged van but struck the first tractor-trailer.

During the crash, the victim was thrown from the minivan, causing her fatal injuries. The van's three other occupants suffered unknown injuries described as non life-threatening. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment. No information was given as to whether the truck drivers suffered any injuries.

The current conditions of the driver and two other passengers from the minivan were not reported. The accident remains under investigation. It is not yet known whether any charges will be filed against the driver in connection with the crash.

Once the victim's family has time to deal with the reality that they lost a loved one, their attention may turn to pursuing a wrongful death claim against the party or parties deemed responsible for her death. Additionally, the injured passengers may elect to file personal injury claims. Successfully litigating these claims could lead to an award of damages allowable under New Jersey law.
