Wrongful death occurs when young man steps in front of vehicle.

During the weekend of Nov. 2, a 22-year-old New Jersey man of Morris County lost his life in a pedestrian accident. He was struck by a vehicle on Route 206 North, just south of Old Chester Road. The wrongful death of this young man is sadly mourned by friends and family.

Moments before the accident, the man was allegedly seen standing next to his car on the shoulder of the road. Police believe that he stepped onto the road, in front of an oncoming vehicle that could not avoid him. He sustained fatal injuries and was airlifted to the hospital. Unfortunately the man died in transit.

Investigators are still busy examining evidence to determine the cause of the accident. The investigation is being led by the Chester Township Police as well as the Morris County Prosecutor's Vehicular Homicide Unit. They have requested information from any witnesses.

New Jersey residents who have lost family members in pedestrian accidents may want to expand their knowledge and understanding of the relevant state laws. This knowledge could help the family of a victim decide the best way to proceed in recovering any monetary damages that could cover the high cost of a funeral. In this case, if the driver of the vehicle is found to have been negligent or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and therefore deemed responsible for the man's death, the family of the deceased retains the right to file a wrongful death claim. In circumstances where the law determines that an act of negligence was committed, a New Jersey court may also consider the imposition of punitive damages, in addition to any compensatory damages awarded.
